Mental Health and OT
Most people don’t think: “I need an occupational therapist” when they’re experiencing mental health concerns, but there’s so much us OT’s can do for you! As occupational therapists we are wired to think about everything that you do and how that promotes and enhances your overall sense of health and wellbeing. We also assess how your internal and external environments impact your ability to engage in what you do successfully.
For example, a common symptom of ill mental health is low motivation. If this is something a client experiences, as an occupational therapist, I might observe what specifically is causing the low motivation and assist in the process breaking down an occupation (or task) for a client to gradually engage in. We refer to this as task analysis and implementing a graded approach, where the aim is to teach your brain that you “can do” instead of “I can’t do or it’s too hard.” Alongside an accountability partnership, this allows for people experiencing ill mental health to engage in what they want, need and have to do knowing they’re going to be 100% supported along the way.
Another example of what occupational therapy can do for clients experiencing ill mental health, is re-integrating back into society while continuing to live with mental health of any kind. Our role can take shape in many ways where we might advocate for you, develop and help you engage in different programs, assist with tools to equip you with specific mental health management strategies - with the specific use of occupations and other evidence-based practises - and so much more!
We are excited to be in the mental health space as OT’s because we believe our roles is invaluable and irreplaceable. We may not be as well known as other disciplines in this area yet, but it is definitely a growing space. If you’re interested in discovering more about how occupational therapy can help you with your mental health experience, please don’t hesitate to contact us as we’d love to chat!
